The Community Advocacy & Responsive Engagement (CARE) Program offers opportunities for all UH students to become actively involved in their community. This student-led program centers collaborative, dynamic partnerships serving the city of Houston and state of Texas through education, research, and service. Students are encouraged to commit five to ten hours each week to a specific project that aims to advocate for shared community development. Here are some of the examples of what CARE students create together with community partners: building public-speaking curriculum for an after-school program, designing and leading hands-on science demonstrations for middle schools, or conducting research on issues like food insecurity and college readiness.
Interested students are also encouraged to consider the student-led organization Honors in Community Health (HICH). HICH provides mentorship and support for the design and implementation of community health projects understanding and addressing the non-medical drivers of health. Community engagement opportunities, including research, internships, and volunteer positions in the Honors College are numerous, and interested students should begin by exploring the Office of Community Engagement’s webpage (forthcoming).
Both CARE and HICH are housed in the Honors College, but are available to all students.
